‘You used to call me Marie…’ follows two souls through eight Métis love stories at eight distinct periods in history. Moving through different lives, we watch Iskwewo, Napew and Mistatim before and after the colonization of Treaty 6. We watch the emergence of the Métis nations across the plains, the robust colonization that arises from the fur trade and the political uprising of the Métis association of Alberta in the 1930’s. Beginning in a creation story and ending in the present, ‘You used to call me Marie…’ shares the Callihoo women’s love stories, their fight for their people as well as their resilient sovereignty as Métis women.
